In the year 2012, we are lucky enough to be bombarded by new entertainment on a daily basis. However, as we all know, finding that one series that you genuinely can NOT wait a week to tune into, is truly a rare occurence.
Sherlock, the BBC’s modern take on Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective stories, is a gloriously entertaining and thoughtful series based in present day London. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes and Martin Freeman (The Office, UK) as Dr. Watson, each episode is a staggering 90 minutes long, but there are (sadly) only 3 episodes per series, and only 2 series so far.
If you haven’t read the books or seen any of the other productions based on Sherlock Holmes, what awaits you is a whirlwind of highly complex and intricately weaved crimes solved by Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Holmes is an unequivocal genius who has all the social graces of a hungry dog, but enough charm to make him extremely likeable to any audience.
Apart from the characters themselves, my favourite aspect of this series’ adaptation is the somewhat romantic and magical presentation of London and England. It definitely draws on the stereotypes from tea, rain & a love for the monarchy to eccentricity and night robes.
This is my very highest recommendation for a tintalizing night in, I would recommend watching this with friends, hot beverages (and a roaring fire… if at all possible). But be warned, it can be fairly scary at points – but Sherlock normally saves the day.
While I imagine many people have already seen Sherlock… I couldn’t bare the thought of those who hadn’t yet. If you, like me, missed out on Sherlock when it was on television you can get the boxset here.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
