Good Monday everyone!
We hope you had a fabulous weekend. Today, we have a treat for you in the form of Blog of the Month. Justina Blakeney’s blog is a fantastic place for interior inspiration, DIYs, and other visually stunning material. She recently announced that she is working with publishers Abrams on her first book – named THE NEW BOHEMIANS. Holly and I are both very excited to see it! I particularly love Justina’s wonderful print rich and colourful interior style.
If you haven’t already read her blog or heard of her, you are in for a treat!
Tell us a little bit about you and your blog and how it all began.
Ever since I was a child I was very art and design oriented. I loved to paint, sew and collage. After studying art in college I moved to Italy and began to think about design as a way to make a living using my creative talents. I opened a small boutique for vintage and new-designer clothing and I found that after a few years, I was most excited about the finding vintage objects and furniture for the shop. It was then that I realized my passion for decor and began working on home decor projects. I originally began blogging as a way to do something creative everyday. I loved blogging right away as it was a natural way to combine so many of the things that I love including writing, photography, graphic design, crafting, styling, collaging, curating and decorating. Now, My blog is truly an extension of myself. I blog about all the things that I love–my family, my jungalow, my closet, my obsession will plants and global textiles, wild patterns, thrifted finds and bohemian dwellings.
What is your greatest skill?
Probably my ability to be a chameleon–I blend in and adapt easily to new surroundings and situations.
The Jungalow is pretty colourful – what inspired your interior?
The Jungalow is wild like the jungle, but cozy and homey like a bungalow. I tend to layer colors and pattern and include plenty of greenery. I like to mix old and new, and create unexpected vignettes. I am a maximalist and I love to mix pieces from different cultures: a kilim rug with a kantha covered ottoman and a Moroccan wedding blanket next to a Mexican Serape and Japanese ceramics–that’s the global vibe the inspires me so!
What is your favourite DIY / reused item in your home?
I really love the collage of windows that I have in my bedroom. I use them as frames and rotate art in them–which keeps things fun–like a mini gallery of sorts. I found the windows at a house that was under construction and saved them from being trashed–so funny that someone else’s trash has turned into my favorite thing at home!
Who inspires you most?
Tough question–impossible to narrow it down to just one person.
My mother is a huge inspiration to me. She handles everything so gracefully and in such a humble way. She’s also the smartest person that I know. I admire Frida Kahlo, Josephine Baker, Bjork, Jonathan Adler, Audrey Hepburn…agggghhh so many people!!
What is your favourite meal?
Juevos Rancheros! (I LOVE breakfasts most!)
What is it about where you live that makes you smile the most?
who I share my home with…they make me smile most–especially my little baby daughter and all of my plants!
What is your biggest interior turn off?
When a home does not at all reflect the people who live in it.
What’s your best insider tip for people visiting LA?
The Long Beach flea market is secretly better than the Rosebowl flea.

What does home mean to you?
Home to me is a wet canvas…it means creativity, good vibes, relaxation, productivity, music, flux, growth, cuddles, colors, comfort food, warmth…family!
Thanks so much to Justina for being with us at We Heart Home!
